In one of my courses, Games Gender Culture, my group was tasked to tackle an issue in the gaming industry. We chose to create a game with an elderly woman protagonist dealing with Alzheimer's Disease because the elderly and women are rarely seen in games as engaging characters. It is even more uncommon to see the stereotypes surrounding their physical characteristics to be addressed. Our text-adventure allowed the player to take multiple paths, which affected the result of the quiz provided in the end of the game. The quiz was implemented not only to entice the player to absorb the story but also to make a play at the player's memory. Within this project, I created the dialogue and sequenced them into the story using HTML and Twine. The project received positive feedback because of its artwork and detail. Everything from the dialogue, to the names, to the clothing of each character was thought out and when put together, successfully achieved our goal of empowering a character that defies the expectations placed on her by the other villagers in the story. Ry’s story is one of many games that are a call to action on bringing more diversity and discussion into the gaming industry.
